The first generation of the 8 Series, also known as the 8 Series E31, marked a significant milestone in BMW history, combining bold performance, avant-garde design and technological innovation. Design work began in 1984, and in 1989, when it was unveiled at the IAA in Frankfurt, the BMW 8 Series immediately captured attention, positioning itself as the near-successor to the 6 Series.

Designed by Klaus Kapitza, the wedge-shaped body with long hood and steep stern was reminiscent of the BMW M1, adding a touch of sportiness to the extraordinary elegance. The BMW 8 Series was the first road-going model to offer a V12 engine combined with a 6-speed manual transmission, setting new standards in terms of performance. It also pioneered the use of drive-by-wire electronic throttle control and a steerable rear axle, attesting to its innovative character.

Technological advances were not limited to the mechanical. Innovative systems such as Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), speed-sensitive power steering and Electronic Damper Control were offered as options, helping to make the 8 Series the most modern BMW of the late 80s. With a drag coefficient of less than 0.3 and a multiplex system for networking ECUs, the 8 Series set new standards in aerodynamics and automotive electronics.

Over the years, the engine range has expanded, culminating in 1992 with the arrival of the powerful 850CSi, followed by upgraded versions such as the 850Ci and 840. The 8 Series combined avant-garde elegance, exclusive luxury and exceptional performance, creating a legacy that continues in subsequent 8 Series models. In all, more than 30,000 examples of this luxury coupé left the factory until production ended in 1999.
