First-generation X5

Manufactured from 1999 to 2006, the BMW X5 E53 marked the beginning of the X5 saga, emerging in the wake of the BMW Group's acquisition of Land Rover. This marriage profoundly influenced the design, making the X5 a luxury SUV benefiting from Land Rover's off-road technologies.
BMW and Land Rover Technology merge
Developed shortly after the acquisition of Land Rover, the X5 E53 shared key components with the Range Rover model (L322), including controlled descent and off-road engine management systems. The symbiosis between BMW and Land Rover technologies was particularly notable, offering drivers an unrivalled off-road experience.
Platform and System Sharing

Second-generation X5

The second-generation BMW X5, the X5 E70, made its debut in July 2006 for the 2007 model year, bringing significant improvements and broadening the horizons of the luxury SUV. Let's take a look at the key elements of this pivotal period.
Increased versatility
One of the major advances of the X5 E70 was the introduction of BMW's iDrive system as standard on all models. This integration enhanced the user experience and was accompanied by a third-row seating option, increasing capacity to seven passengers.
Nomenclature and Technical Evolutions
After 2008, model and engine nomenclature followed BMW's standard structure. The X5 3.0si was renamed the X5 xDrive30i, and the X5 4.8i became the X5 xDrive48i. In 2010, BMW replaced the DVD-based CCC system (powering iDrive) with a hard-drive-based CIC system.
In 2009, the xDrive35d diesel variant was introduced in Canada and the USA, expanding the engine range.
Performance at the Summit with Version M
The M Performance version, unveiled at the New York Auto Show in April 2009, marked a significant milestone. Sharing its powertrain with the X6 M, the X5 M was equipped with BMW's first supercharged M Power V8, delivering 555 hp (414 kW) and 680 N⋅m of torque.
Restyling for maturity
The X5 E70 underwent a facelift in 2011, known as LCI (Life Cycle Impulse), further refining its looks and features.
In 2011, the X5 became BMW's 3rd best-selling model, demonstrating its growing appeal alongside the 3 and 5 series. The second-generation X5 has consolidated its place in the world of luxury SUVs, combining performance, versatility and prestige.
Third-generation X5
Unparalleled Elegance and Performance
The third-generation BMW X5, the X5 F15 (or F85 for the X5 M), entered the spotlight on May 30, 2013, unveiling a masterful fusion of elegance and power. Officially launched in November 2013, this iteration continued to push the boundaries of luxury and performance.
New Platform, New Energy
Sharing the chassis and wheelbase of its predecessor, the E70, the X5 F15 introduced a trio of engines offering exceptional versatility. The range included the xDrive50i (V8 petrol producing 450 hp), the xDrive30d (turbocharged in-line 6-cylinder diesel producing 258 hp) and the M50d Performance (turbocharged in-line 6-cylinder diesel producing 381 hp). In December 2013, further options were added to the range, including the xDrive40d and xDrive35i models (in-line 6-cylinder petrol), as well as the xDrive25d (all-wheel drive) and sDrive25d (rear-wheel drive), offering a variety of choices in terms of performance and efficiency.
Electrical Innovation
A major step in the evolution of the X5 F15 was the introduction of a plug-in hybrid model, the xDrive40e. Featuring a four-cylinder turbo engine, this model was powered by an electric motor generating a maximum output of 83 kW, with a continuous output of 55 kW thanks to the 9 kWh Li-ion battery.
The BMW X5 F15 thus continued to excel in its fusion of technological innovation, dynamic performance and refined luxury, cementing its reputation as a pioneer in the luxury SUV segment.
Fourth-generation X5
The Ultimate Evolution of Luxury and Performance
The fourth-generation BMW X5, the X5 G05, was revealed to the online world on June 6, 2018, marking a new era of sophistication and exceptional performance. Officially launched in November 2018, the X5 G05 is based on the BMW Group's new Cluster Architecture (CLAR), raising standards in the luxury SUV category.
State-of-the-art technology and versatility
Based on the CLAR platform, the X5 G05 redefined the concept of dynamic driving with a variety of engine configurations and advanced technologies. All models in the 2019 model year were equipped with xDrive all-wheel drive, while an sDrive (rear-wheel drive) variant was added to the US range in 2020, powered by the inline six-cylinder B58 petrol engine (sDrive40i).
Another addition for the 2020 model year was the xDrive45e PHEV plug-in hybrid model. Combining BMW's B58 engine with an 82 kW electric motor, it offers a combined power output of 290 kW from its 24 kWh battery.
Long-wheelbase variant for the Chinese market
A long-wheelbase (LWB) version of the BMW X5 has been developed specifically for the Chinese market under the model code G18. With a wheelbase 13 cm longer than the standard X5, the G18 mirrors the wheelbase span of the X7 and XM.
Recognition and Exceptional Performance
The X5 G05 has received rave reviews, being awarded the title of Luxury SUV of the Year by What Car? magazine in January 2021. The xDrive45e M Sport version received a maximum five-star rating in the car review.
X5 M: Performance at its best
The X5 M, a high-performance variant, followed previous generations with the E70 X5 M (2009-2013) and the F85 X5 M (2014-2018). The G05 X5 M version, launched in 2019, embodies the pinnacle of power and agility in the X5 M line.
