Sporty compact

The BMW 1 Series embodies the entry-level profile of the prestigious German brand, while retaining the essence of BMW's characteristic luxury and performance. Launched in 2004, the 1 Series was designed to offer a dynamic driving experience in a compact format. This series is the first compact car study by the Bavarian manufacturer, with the exception of the 3 Series Compact derived from the BMW 3 Series Sedan (E36 and E46).

The first-generation BMW 1 Series entered the market in 2004 with the 5-door version (E87), powered exclusively by 4-cylinder engines. By 2005, however, the range had been extended to include a 6-cylinder engine, broadening the options available to enthusiasts. 2007 saw the introduction of the 3-door version (E81), accompanied by a restyling of the 5-door version. In October 2007, BMW extended the range with the launch of the coupé model (E82) and the cabriolet (E88), offering four different versions of this iconic vehicle.

The first generation 1 Series introduced significant advances in energy efficiency under the banner of BMW Efficient Dynamics. Features such as the glass mat battery, brake energy recuperation, and intelligent management of secondary components enabled the development of an innovative engine idle system, reducing fuel consumption and pollutant emissions.

The 2007 models benefit from many of these innovations, including piloted air flaps, brake energy recuperation, tires with reduced rolling resistance, and an automatic engine stop-start function. These features have helped reinforce BMW's commitment to more environmentally-friendly vehicles.

The first-generation 1 Series stands out for its diversity of body styles, offering 3- and 5-door versions, coupe, cabriolet, and even a three-door Limited Sport Edition. This exclusive edition, produced in just 2,000 units, features exclusive paintwork from the Motorsport catalog and the "Pack M" so popular with enthusiasts.

The three-door model, which comes factory-fitted with 4 seats, also offers the option of a 5-seat configuration at no extra cost. In 2009, the introduction of the 118d model extended the range of diesel engines, complementing the 120d and 123d versions already on the market.

The 1 Series Coupé, marketed between 2007 and 2013, featured a variety of engines, from the 120d to the powerful 135i. The Cabriolet version (E88), debuting in 2008 and continuing until 2014, took up the existing Coupé models, with the only distinction being its retractable roof.

The pinnacle of the first-generation 1 Series is symbolized by the BMW 1 Series M Coupé, launched in early 2011. Powered by a 2,979 cm³ supercharged 6-cylinder engine, it embodies the Motorsport spirit with exceptional performance. Equipped with rear-wheel drive, a 6-speed manual gearbox and controlled weight, it offers a pure and captivating driving experience.

The first-generation BMW 1 Series left an indelible mark by combining elegance, performance and innovation, consolidating BMW's reputation as a benchmark automaker.

The second-generation BMW 1 Series, launched in 2011, brings a new dynamic to the compact segment. With its taut, dynamic silhouette, the BMW 1 Series is distinguished by a forwardly elongated rocker line and powerfully contoured flanks. This exterior design reflects BMW's commitment to sporty driving and precise handling.

Inside, the emphasis is on driving pleasure, with a variety of BMW quality features. Advanced driver assistance systems, such as the parking assistant and rearview camera, underline the brand's commitment to innovation. Connectivity is also on the agenda with BMW ConnectedDrive, offering drivers mobility services via the Internet.

In 2012, the range is marked by the arrival of the top-of-the-range model, the BMW M135i, delivering an impressive 320 hp (235 kW). This model embodies the characteristic harmony of the M line, fusing rear-wheel drive with cutting-edge suspension technology for an exceptional driving experience.

The 2015 restyling gives the 1 Series an even more powerful appearance, with modifications to the front and rear. The engines benefit from improved power and reduced pollutant emissions. The 1 Series maintains its distinctive position as a rear-wheel drive in the compact segment.

In Phase 2, the 1 Series sees the introduction of new three- and four-cylinder engines, enhancing its fuel efficiency. Aesthetic and technological adjustments contribute to its continued appeal. Phase 3, launched in 2017, brings distinct finishes, dark aesthetic elements, and interior enhancements, underlining BMW's commitment to the ongoing evolution of the 1 Series.

The second-generation production period runs from 2011 to 2019, marking a decade of innovation, performance and elegance in the BMW 1 Series compact car segment.

The third generation of the BMW 1 Series, introduced in 2019 with the F40 model, marks a significant evolution in the premium compact segment. Sporting a modern, dynamic look, these vehicles embody BMW's progressive design language, with a taut silhouette, assertive lines and a distinctive front end giving the car an undeniable presence in its class.

This new generation is distinguished by a series of notable technical changes. Firstly, it adopts BMW's UKL platform, shared with MINI, which has meant the absence of six-cylinder engines and the transition to front-wheel drive, although all-wheel drive (xDrive) is available on certain models, including the M135i and 120d.

The BMW 1 Series (F40) offers a range of trim levels to suit a variety of tastes and needs, including standard, M Design, Business Design, Edition Sport, M Sport, and M Performance. A special series, the M Sport Pro Edition, added in July 2022, offers exclusive options for performance enthusiasts.

In addition to the traditional 5-door version, BMW has expanded the range by introducing a Sedan version, unveiled at the Guangzhou Motor Show as the Compact Sedan Concept. Launched in China in 2017, this four-door variant is a front-wheel drive based on the 2 Series Active Tourer, and rivals models such as the Audi A3 Sedan and Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class.

The third-generation BMW 1 Series emphasizes sporty driving dynamics, supported by agile and efficient powertrains. Options include an adaptive sports suspension with adjustable damping characteristics. Inside, the cockpit remains true to BMW's typical orientation, putting the driver at the center of the experience.

Driver assistance systems have also been enhanced, offering features such as collision warning with automatic braking, parking assistant, and reverse assist, reinforcing overall vehicle safety.

In 2020, an engine update was carried out, introducing a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine with power variants, including 178 hp (131 kW) in the BMW 120i and 265 hp (195 kW) in the BMW 128ti.

The third-generation BMW 1 Series continues to set standards in performance, design and innovation, offering a captivating driving experience while incorporating BMW's latest technological advances. With its balanced combination of style, dynamism and advanced features, it remains a benchmark in the premium compact segment.
